Latest update on covid vaccinations, cases, deaths and hospital admissions for Merseyside

It is now nearly one month since the government lifted all remaining Covid-19 restrictions on so-called Freedom Day.

Just under four weeks since that moment, we thought it would be good to take an in-depth look at where the different boroughs of the Liverpool City Region stand on all the important Covid-19 metrics.

This of course includes infection rates, hospital admissions and vaccination uptake.

Liverpool

We will begin with the largest borough of the city region, the Liverpool city area, which has suffered hugely throughout the different waves of the pandemic so far.

Infections

The latest case data is based on the 7-day period between August 6 and 12.

Based on this data, Liverpool's current infection rate stands at 358 cases per 100,000 people.

This rate has plateaued of late - a week ago the city's rate stood at 362 cases per 100,000.

Hospital admissions

The latest official data we have for NHS covid hospital admissions runs up to August 10 - it will be updated later this week.

Those latest figures showed that there were 121 covid patients being cared for within Liverpool's main hospital trust - which includes the Royal Liverpool Hospital and Aintree.

That is an increase of 17 admissions from a week earlier but still a much smaller total than the nearly 500 the trust experienced at the height of the winter wave.

Of the latest 121 admissions, 13 are in such a serious condition that they are requiring ventilation to help them breathe.

Deaths

The data for covid deaths lags behind other statistics, and is done on a weekly basis based on people who have died where Covid-19 was on the death certificate.

In Liverpool, there were five covid deaths registered in the week ending July 30 - a fall of 6 from the week before.

Across July in total there were 27 covid deaths registered for the city.

Vaccinations

Liverpool continues to lag behind some of its neighbours and the national average when it comes to vaccine uptake.

Currently 68.9% of all adults in Liverpool have had a single jab, while 57.1% are now fully protected with two vaccines.

This compares with the national figures of 89.4% and 76.7% for the UK as a whole.

Wirral

Infection rate

Wirral's infection rate for the most recent week of data stands at 282 cases per 100,000 people.

This represents a small decline from the previous week, which stood at 287 cases per 100,000.

Hospital admissions

Wirral's main hospital trust includes Arrowe Park Hospital.

As of August 10, the trust was caring for 41 covid patients - which is two patients down on the week before.

Eight of those 41 patients were requiring ventilation for breathing.

Deaths

The weekly death data shows that Wirral saw five covid deaths in the week ending July 30.

This was an increase of three deaths from the previous week.

Across July there were 11 covid deaths registered in Wirral.

Vaccinations

Wirral is doing considerably better than neighbouring Liverpool when it comes to vaccine uptake.

The borough now has 84% of its adult population single jabbed, while 75% have taken up both vaccines.

Knowsley

Infections

Knowsley has been struggling again with very high covid infection rates, but they have come down of late.

The latest week's infection rate (upto August 12) stands at a high 400 cases per 100,000 people.

But this is a significant reduction from the 516 rate that the borough recorded the week before.

Hospital admissions

Knowsley's main hospital trust covers St Helens as well, so the figures need to be applied to both boroughs.

As of August 10 there were 38 covid patients in the trust - which covers St Helens and Whiston hospitals.

That's a decrease of around 10 from a week before.

There were six patients requiring ventilation at the most recent point.

Deaths

In the week ending July 30, there was just one covid death recorded for the borough of Knowsley.

This is a fall from the two deaths registered in the previous week.

Five deaths in total have been recorded in Knowsley across July.

Vaccinations

Knowsley is also doing better than Liverpool in terms of vaccinations - but not as good as Wirral.

The borough has seen 76% of its adults get one vaccine, with 65.4% now double jabbed.

St Helens

Infections

The infection rate numbers for St Helens are a concern.

The latest data shows that for the latest 7-day period, an infection rate of 650 cases per 100,000 people was recorded - significantly the highest in the region.

What's particularly concerning is how quickly that has risen - as it stood at just 339 cases per 100,000 just a week earlier.

Health bosses will be hoping these numbers don't continue to increase at this rate.

Hospital admissions

As mentioned earlier, St Helens' main hospital trust serves Knowsley as well.

As of August 10 there were 38 covid patients in the trust - which covers St Helens and Whiston hospitals.

That's a decrease of around 10 from a week before.

There were six patients requiring ventilation at the most recent point.

Deaths

As mentioned, the latest death figures only take us to the week ending July 30.

There were three covid deaths recorded in St Helens in that week, which was the same figure as the week before.

Across July, there were eight deaths registered in the borough with covid on the death certificate.

Vaccinations

Despite its high current infection rate, St Helens is doing better than some other Merseyside boroughs when it comes to vaccination uptake.

Around 85% of adults have taken up one jab, while just shy of 74% have had both vaccines.

Sefton

Infections

Sefton's current infection rate stands at 304 cases per 100,000 - one of the lower rates in the region.

But that figure does represent an increase from the 287 registered in the borough the week before.

Hospital admissions

The Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust was caring for 23 covid patients as of August 10, a small fall from the 21 in the trust a week earlier.

Two patients were requiring ventilation in the most recent figures.

Deaths

There were three covid deaths recorded in the Sefton area in the week ending July 30 - significantly less than the 10 registered the week before.

Across July, Sefton has recorded 18 deaths with covid referenced on the death certificate.

Vaccinations

Sefton has a better vaccine uptake record than some of its neighbours, with 82% of adults now single jabbed and 73% double jabbed.
