Latest Tottenham transfer rumours: Vertonghen wants to stay, three-year Willian deal

It's crunch time for Tottenham and Jose Mourinho, as they face a monumental few weeks in their season to achieve their objectives following some difficult results.

An FA Cup exit at the hands of Norwich City in midweek represents a significant blow for the Lilywhites, who now must focus on securing Champions League football via their Premier League finish.

On top of that, Spurs are behind heading into the second leg of their Champions League tie with RB Leipzig and have work to do to save their continental campaign.

While there's plenty happening on the field, work on the transfer front is also underway and that means plenty of speculation, so we have gathered some of the latest snippets below.

Burnley v Tottenham: Jose Mourinho press conference

Vertonghen set for stay

Jan Vertonghen's future at Tottenham remains uncertain as he rapidly approaches the end of his deal in North London but DH states he wants to stay at the club.

The Belgian international has been linked with a host of clubs across the continent, including Inter Milan and Napoli, but it seems he isn't closing the door or extending his spell with Spurs.

The 32-year-old has continued to be a regular this season but, due to his age, a new long-term deal is highly unlikely and a short-term extension is the most likely to occur.

However, Spurs have also been widely linked with a move in the transfer market for a new defender and that could affect what happens with Vertonghen.

Spurs take steps for Smalling

Tottenham and Premier League rivals Everton have both taken 'a few steps' towards signing Chris Smalling in the summer transfer window, Italian outlet Leggo reports.

The Manchester United defender is currently spending the season on loan with Roma, who want to sign him permanently, and his performances have led to talk about an England recall.

It is stated that United would be willing to accept a sale if their €20m asking price for the 30-year-old was met and the defender does of course have links with Jose Mourinho.

During the Portuguese boss' stint at Old Trafford, Smalling was a regular in the heart of defence but then fell out of the picture when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge.

Tottenham ready Willian offer

Tottenham are preparing to offer a three-year deal to Chelsea winger Willian at the end of the season when he will be available on a free transfer, according to Universo Online via The Sun.

The report states that Chelsea have broken their usual procedure of only offering a 12 month deal to players over the age of 30 by putting a two-year deal on the table for the 31-year-old Brazilian.

However, Willian is said to be keen on securing a three-year deal to remain in London and, if Chelsea do not present that offer, then Spurs have the opportunity to swoop.

It's claimed Spurs are ready to meet his contract demands, with Mourinho certainly be to pushing for the deal having worked with the player during his time at Stamford Bridge.
