Latest Tottenham transfer rumours: Smalling update, Napoli enter Vertonghen race, Mourinho rules out overhaul

Tottenham Hotspur missed out on the chance to make up ground on the Premier League top-four places on Sunday afternoon, losing 3-2 at home to fellow top-four chasers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But even though the main focus should be on matters on the pitch at the minute, it appears as though the bulk of the attention is already being focused on the upcoming summer transfer window.

Spurs have already been linked with a host of names from around Europe, with plenty of others expected to be linked in the coming months.

With that in mind, here is a round-up of the day's very latest Tottenham transfer news.

Mourinho wary of Norwich ahead of cup clash

Smalling latest

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be increasingly confident they can strike a deal to sign Chris Smalling in the summer.

Tuttosport are the latest publication to reveal Spurs’ interest in Smalling and suggest that Jose Mourinho has identified the England international as the man to help solve the club’s defensive problems.

And the report also suggests that Spurs will make their move if AS Roma fail to reach an agreement with Manchester United over a permanent deal.

Napoli enter Vertonghen race

Napoli are the latest club to be linked with Jan Vertonghen as he nears the exit at Tottenham this summer.

The Belgium's deal with Spurs is up in the summer, and he is expected to leave north London with no renewal believed to be forthcoming.

Italian journalist Cosimo Silva, via SportWitness, is reporting that Vertonghen is being eyed by the Serie A side as a replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly.

Mourinho rules out overhaul

Jose Mourinho has ruled out a summer overhaul at Tottenham this summer.

There has been strong speculation that the Portuguese will overhaul his squad in the upcoming window in a bid to ensure they are competing for major honours next season.

But Mourinho, speaking in his  Norwich press conference, has ruled out making wholesale changes this summer.

He said: “Massive changes? No. Not massive changes. First of all because that is not what we think we need.

“Secondly because of the profile of the club. Third because of what the market is and year after year after year is more difficult.

“So I am not thinking of an overhaul. Of course we need to make our squad better, that is obvious.”
