Latest Tottenham transfer rumours:Kalvin Phillips eyed, new deal for Japhet Tanganga, Chris Smalling wanted

Tottenham’s hopes of securing a top-four finish were handed a boost after Manchester United beat Chelsea on Monday night.

As a result of United’s 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho’s side now sit just a point behind Frank Lampard’s men having played the same number of games

If Spurs were to secure Champions League football next season, then one imagines Mourinho could be in need of significantly adding to his squad in the summer.

With that in mind, here is a round-up of the very latest Tottenham transfer rumours.

Bent’s verdict on Tanganga

Former Spurs striker Darren Bent has been waxing lyrical about youngster Japhet Tanganga following the news the club is close to agreeing a new contract with him.

The youngster’s emergence forced the experienced Danny Rose to head to Newcastle United on loan in January in order to secure regular first-team football.

And Bent believes getting the young defender tied down to a new deal is important for the north London club.

“He’s been absolutely fantastic,” Bent told Football Insider. “He’s got everything, he’s been absolutely fantastic since breaking into the side under Mourinho.

“He thoroughly deserves it.”

Smalling set for Premier League return

Chris Smalling is in talks over a return to the Premier League as Everton and Tottenham battle for his signature.

The centre-back has spent the season on loan at Roma from Manchester United and has reignited his career with a string of impressive performances for the Italian giants.

The Serie A side will attempt to land Smalling on a permanent deal at the end of the season but will face competition from the Premier League pair, according to Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport via The Sun.

Phillips eyed by Mourinho

Tottenham are interested in signing Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips.

Football Insider are reporting that Mourinho’s side “will join the race to sign” for the 24-year-old in the summer under one condition – that Leeds fail to gain promotion from the Sky Bet Championship this season.

Phillips has been linked with moves to Aston Villa and Burnley in the past, after impressing for the Whites last season.
