Latest Public Health Scotland data shows West Lothian below national average but Covid-19 cases double across Scotland

West Lothian continues to sit below the national average for Covid-19 as Nicola Sturgeon revealed cases in Scotland have doubled.

The latest Public Health Scotland figures show that there were just four new cases of the virus recorded in the county, as of May 24.

Across the week between May 16 to May 22 another 41 positive cases were returned.

This means the weekly positivity rate is 22.4 per 100,000, compared to the national average of 44.7.

Meanwhile, Glasgow remains the only region in Level Three but Nicola Sturgeon said today there is room for optimism in the city, and in East Renfrewshire.

Ms Sturgeon said: “I’m pleased to say that there is some signs for cautious optimism,” and she continued that there had been encouraging signs in the last two days especially.

She said Scotland was experiencing a rise in cases and that over the last 16 days “case numbers albeit from a very low level have actually doubled.”

She added: “Some of the increase in case numbers being recorded just now will be due to the easing of restrictions over the past month.”

But she said “another important factor” was the latest variant of Covid-19.

West Lothian and most other parts of Scotland are expected to move down to level one restrictions on June 7 - but this could change depending on infection rates.
