Latest Public Health Scotland data reveals huge rise in new cases of Covid-19 in West Lothian

New cases of the coronavirus continue to rise in West Lothian.

The latest Public Health Scotland data shows that there were 76 cases of the contagion recorded in the county as of August 22.

Across the week between August 14 and 20 there were another 615 new cases.

The 615 new cases is nearing toward record levels in the region, despite the vaccination programme.

Weekly test positivity in West Lothian was 334.6 positive tests per 100,000 residents, just under the national average of 364.6.

All 37 neighbourhoods in West Lothian are returning positive tests at the moment.

Bankton and Murieston has the highest infection rates with 25 new cases among their 5270 residents over the past week.

Nationally, there were 3189 new cases in total overnight and no deaths in Scotland.

Meanwhile, booster coronavirus jabs will be needed for some people but more evidence is required before any decision is made on a wider rollout of third doses, an expert advising the Government has said.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) meet this week to discuss a pathway forward.

Committee member Professor Adam Finn said a decision is imminent that those who are “very unlikely to be well protected by those first two doses” will need a third one.

His comments on a wider rollout were echoed by another Government adviser, Professor Peter Openshaw, who said further evidence is needed on any benefits booster jabs might bring.
