Latest Public Health Scotland Covid infection rate data as Nicola Sturgeon prepares to deliver pandemic update

A further 6,170 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in Scotland in the last 24 hours – with the disease claiming another nine lives .

Latest data published today by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland shows there are 629 Covid patients in Scottish hospitals – up 44 since yesterday.

The number of people battling the virus in ICUs across the nation is 59 – up five over the same period.

Scotland's Covid death toll now stands at 8,127.

However, 10,554 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate up to Sunday, August 29.

The figures were published ahead of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon delivering a Covid update to the Scottish Parliament around 2.50pm today.

In terms of Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, North Lanarkshire has the highest rate in the country – at 1,247 as of Monday, August 30.

East Dunbartonshire has the second-highest infection rate at 1,207.4 while West Dunbartonshire is third with 1,128.6.

In terms of Ayrshire's three local authorities, North Ayrshire has the highest rate of 733.7 while South Ayrshire's rate is 632.2 and East Ayrshire's is 605.3.

A total of 377 new cases of Covid were reported in Ayrshire - 99 more than yesterday. Broken down, 145 were in North Ayrshire, 123 in East Ayrshire and 109 in South Ayrshire.

There are 21 Covid patients in Ayrshire hospitals – up one from yesterday – while fewer than five people are battling the disease in intensive care in the region.

A total of 4,108,804 people have received the first dose of a Covid vaccine and 3,691,066 have received a second dose.
