Latest product recall as Co-op recalls 'wrongly labelled' pork

Supermarket giant Co-op has recalled one of its meat products after a label mix-up.

The store sent out a batch of its 'Herby Pork Loin medalllions' to its stores to be sold, but had to recall the product entirely from the shelves and from people's homes - because they weren't 'herby pork loin medallions' at all.

In fact, they were Asian-Style Pork Belly Slices - so at least the customer was getting some pork of some description, even though there would have been very much a different flavour from 'herby' to 'Asian-style'.

But the Food Standards Agency issued an urgent recall because the Asian style products contain soya - which wasn't on the 'herby medallions' ingredients list.

And the FSA said that could cause a problem for people who are allergic to soya and carefully study labels to make sure they never eat anything with soya in.

"This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to soya," said an FSA spokesperson.

"Co-op is recalling the above product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.

"The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product," the FSA spokesperson added.

A spokesperson for Co-op gave the following advice to customers: "If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to soya, do not eat it.

"Instead customers should call 0800 0686 727, email customer.careline@coop.co.uk or if customers are making an essential trip to the nearest Co-op store, they can return the item in-store for a full refund," she added.

Earlier this month, Bristol Live published a list of all the foods recalled by manufacturers and supermarkets so far in June - find out that full list here.
