Latest pictures as Manchester United face West Brom in two Old Trafford friendlies before Premier League return

Manchester United split a pair of behind-closed-doors friendlies against Championship promotion candidates West Brom at Old Trafford on Friday, with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes lining up together for the first time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men took on the Baggies in two different 90-minute games - with teams arriving separately - as they stepped up preparations for their first fixture of the Premier League's resumption against Tottenham in seven days' time.

United - whose scheduled friendly against Stoke City on Tuesday was cancelled at the last minute after Potters boss Michael O'Neill tested positive for Covid-19 - confirmed that they narrowly lost the first practice encounter 2-1, before Andreas Pereira's brace and a further effort from young winger Tahith Chong sealed a 3-1 triumph in the second contest.

No doubt much to the excitement of United fans, Pogba and Fernandes featured as a midfield tandem for the first time in the same match against West Brom, having previously been placed on opposing sides for intra-squad friendlies at Old Trafford and Carrington.

Pogba missed much of the season through injury prior to English football's coronavirus shutdown, meaning he has yet to play alongside impressive January recruit Fernandes in a competitive fixture.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Odion Ighalo were also pictured in action against Slaven Bilic's Baggies, who currently sit second in the Championship and resume their promotion campaign with a derby against Midlands rivals Birmingham City on June 20.

Some players were retained for both matches as Solskjaer looks to ensure his whole squad are fighting fit for the Premier League's imminent return.

If United are able to beat Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next Friday, they would rise above Chelsea and into the top four on goal difference, with Frank Lampard's side not resuming their season until a trip to Aston Villa on June 21.

Solskjaer's team were in strong form before English football's shutdown, going 11 League matches unbeaten, progressing through to the FA Cup quarter-finals and also taking a commanding 5-0 first-leg lead against Austrian side LASK Linz in their Europa League last-16 tie.
