Latest on traffic chaos and delays on M4 and M5 as thousands head to Weston Air Show

Highways England is warning people to leave extra time for their journeys today (June 22) due to traffic chaos on the M4 and M5.

There are 20-mile queues on the M5 as well as 80-minute delays on the M4, as people use the Prince of Wales Bridge to head for England as the old M48 bridge is closed.

For the latest traffic updates, you can follow Bristol Live's blog here.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix is warning of "severe delays" on the M4 eastbound between J23A for Magor Services and J20, which is for the M5 Almondsbury Interchange. Travel time is at least 80 minutes.

On the M5, there is heavy traffic southbound, with hour-long delays.

What Highways England has said

Highways England said there are no incidents reported, but delays are "due to full weekend closures of the eastbound M48 Severn Crossing and the M49."

They also warned people to be aware of the delays as thousands are due to visit Weston-super-Mare this weekend, for the town's popular air show. The Red Arrows are included in the flight schedule, which you can see here.

Just before 1pm, Highways England said: "Delays on the M4 east are approximately an hour.

"Delays on the M5 south are approximately 45 minutes above normal.

"Please allow extra time for your journey if using routes this afternoon."

Diversion routes

The M48 bridge is closed until 6am on Monday, June 4. The diversion is in place via the M4.
