Latest on man detained by armed police following axe incident

Police have issued an update after armed officers detained a man following an incident with an axe.

A witness called police just before 4.20pm on Monday (June 8) to report a man with an axe causing a disturbance outside a flat in Catherine Mead Street, Southville.

An Avon and Somerset police spokeswoman said that evening: "Soon afterwards the occupier of the property - who had been out at the time - called to report damage to the door."

A police helicopter circled south Bristol in search for the man, while armed police were sent to the scene.

A suspect, detained just before 6pm on Monday, was later released without charge after being identified as a vulnerable adult.

The force spokeswoman said today (June 11): "Officers are liaising with the victim over options to resolve the situation.

"Police are also working with other agencies to ensure everyone involved is appropriately safeguarded."
