Latest NI travel restrictions as Executive due to publish full guidance

New Covid-19 travel restrictions are due to published by the Northern Ireland Executive later on Wednesday.

The paper is said to set out more details of the stay-at-home curfew that comes into force in Northern Ireland from Boxing Day.

Anyone travelling into the region and who plans to stay for at least 24 hours will have to self-isolate for 10 days, according to new travel rules.

BBC News NI reports that the new travel guidance lists what qualifies as essential travel during the restrictions.

The paper also reportedly states that people who routinely cross the border for essential purposes will not be subject to restrictions.

Essential travel includes:

- Returning home, if you are away from your permanent residence

- Work, when you cannot work from home

- Accessing health and social care services

- Accessing critical services

- Fulfilling essential caring responsibilities

- Buying essential goods or services in your local area

- Exercising an animal or going to the vet

- Fulfilling a legal obligation

- Providing emergency response services.

The guidance is said to state that people should only travel within Northern Ireland when it is absolutely necessary.

Today, the Department of Health has also updated the advice to Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) people for the Christmas period and beyond.

It says CEV people are reminded to "consider very carefully any plans for a Christmas Bubble over the festive period".

The DoH has said that unfortunately, they remain "extremely vulnerable to this virus and the safest option is not to form a Christmas bubble".

CEV people are asked to avoid attending shops, pharmacies and hospitality settings unless absolutely necessary.

The advice adds that if you do decide that you wish to meet with family, "this should be for as short a time as possible with very strict precautions".

Christmas bubbling between December 23 and 27, during which three households are able to meet, was previously reduced to a choice of one day within that period.
