Latest NFL preseason proposal would send Lions into worst COVID-19 situation possible

The NFL and NFLPA are still debating over how many preseason games will be played in 2020. The NFL originally cut the preseason from four games to two, but the NFLPA has held firm on not playing any preseason games.

This morning, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that the NFL has sent a new proposal to the NFLPA, suggesting another reduction in preseason games, down from two to only a single game — suggesting they keep Week 3 of the preseason schedule in place.

If the NFLPA accepts the league’s proposal, that would mean the Detroit Lions would travel to Miami on August 27th to take on the Dolphins and per last week’s report from the NFLPA, that would send the Lions into the worst COVID-19 situation possible.

NFLPA overview of COVID-19 map – concentration in NFL markets

The NFLPA still has to approve this proposal, so things are far from finalized, but this situation has to give the Lions some pause.

After a month of training camp in the fourth-best situation possible — which still on its own has several legitimate concerns — how much health/safety risk would the Lions be willing to take by traveling to the most challenging NFL market for a relatively meaningless game?

Stay tuned to Lions Wire for further updates as this situation continues to unfold.
