Coronavirus cases continue to rise in Merseyside as uncertainty remains over the UK’s June 21 unlocking date.
Data from the NHS coronavirus dashboard indicates coronavirus cases have risen significantly in all five of the region’s boroughs, with Wirral now having the highest infection rate of 29.6 cases per 100,000 people.
St Helens, Liverpool and Sefton follow closely behind one another on 20.5, 20.3 and 19.5 cases per 100,000, while Knowsley is now the area with the lowest case rate.
However, its case numbers have risen in recent days in, what is a signal, of the continued threat of the virus.
Wirral’s increase in cases has been by far the highest, with a 380% rise in the week up to May 30.
The rise in cases in Merseyside mimics many places across the country amid concern about the so-called Indian variant of the virus believed to be driving the increase in many areas.
The rates for Merseyside boroughs are not among the highest in the country but public health experts are still urging people to be cautious after the latest easing of restrictions a few weeks ago.
The next planned easing, on June 21, is not confirmed, with the government closely watching case rates across the UK.
Meanwhile, public health officials continue to urge people to get fully vaccinated, ensuring they receive two jabs.
Experts say data shows that groups that have high levels of vaccination are not showing significantly rising case rates, though they say data indicates that two doses are needed for strong protection against the Indian variant.
Anyone over 30 can now book a coronavirus vaccine through the NHS website, though in many cases there are a number of drop-in sessions where you can queue for a vaccine without an appointment.
