Latest Leeds United transfer rumours: Jean-Kevin Augustin fears, Kalvin Phillips gamble

Leeds United have entered a crunch period of the season and the push for a long-awaited promotion to the Premier League, with the next test coming against Huddersfield Town.

Marcelo Bielsa's side enter the Yorkshire derby on Saturday with a five-point advantage in the hunt for automatic promotion, whilst sitting just a single point behind West Brom at the top of the standings.

While the focus is very much on the field and the challenges that await there, work will already be taking place behind the scenes ahead of the summer transfer window.

As such, there are plenty of rumours floating around and we have gathered some of the latest below.

Jean-Kevin Augustin fears

Members of Leeds United's staff are concerned that they will not see the best from RB Leipzig loanee Jean-Kevin Augustin before the end of the season, Football Insider states.

The 22-year-old moved to Elland Road in the January transfer window, seeing a previous spell on loan with Monaco ending prematurely, and will miss the clash against Huddersfield through injury.

As a result, it's stated that Leeds believe that Augustin's chances of spearheading the club to promotion are diminishing, with Augustin also at risk of missing the upcoming two matches against Cardiff City and Fulham.

Augustin has made just three substitute appearances since his arrival in the mid-season transfer window.

Kalvin Phillips gamble

Also from Football Insider , former Leeds United man Danny Mills believes it would be a huge gamble for Gareth Southgate to name Kalvin Phillips in his England squad for the European Championship.

Following another super season at Elland Road, the 24-year-old has been tipped to force his way into the international scene in the near future, although featuring this season would be a major surprise.

Mills believes as much, stating it would be a huge gamble: “He is by far the best player in the Championship but it is not always about ability.

“If you go to the Euros there is all the press attention on you – how does he deal with that? To throw him in at the last minute would be a big gamble.”

Kamara's promotion verdict

Meanwhile, another former Leeds United man has predicted that this will be the season where the Whites finally seal a return to the Premier League.

Chris Kamara has told LeedsLive that he believes Marcelo Bielsa will steer Leeds United to promotion, with the club in a good position heading into the final months of the season.

Leeds have not featured in the top-flight since suffering relegation in the 2003/04 season, which started a rollercoaster ride for the supporters that even saw the club dip into League One.

However, with a five-point lead in the hunt for automatic promotion, the signs are promising and Leeds will have learnt from last season's lessons.
