Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffered a knee dislocation injury during Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos. There have been several new reports related to Mahomes seeking out a second opinion, whether surgery is an option and the timeline for his return from injury. Take a look below to find the latest updates on Mahomes:

Second opinion
Our last update revealed that there was no significant damage related to the knee dislocation injury, however, Mahomes would seek a second opinion just to be safe. This is common practice in the NFL, especially for injuries where surgery is an option.
According to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor, Mahomes has since sought out and completed that second opinion. The second opinion “went well” according to Paylor’s source. There’s not yet a clear timeline for recovery because of the necessary follow-up work in terms of rehab and imaging.
Kansas City Star beat writer Herbie Teope was able to confirm Paylor’s report. He added follow-up evaluations will be important in determining when Mahomes can return to action for the Chiefs.

How did Mahomes avoid damage and is surgery an option?
The latest report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has some new information on the initial knee dislocation injury for Mahomes and how he was able to avoid significant damage to the ligaments in his knee. It also reveals that surgery doesn’t appear to be an option for Mahomes at this time for now or after the season. Take a look at the video below:
I have to wonder if having Dr. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif in the huddle helped in this situation. Duvernay-Tardif was standing over Mahomes as he grasped at his kneecap and could have told him to keep still until the training staff arrived. Duvernay-Tardif did tell the Kansas City Star’s Sam Mellinger that the key to avoiding damage with this type of injury is how quickly the kneecap is put back into place.

Return timeline
The initial timeline for recovery reported by the media had two very specific return dates for Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. He’d either be ready in three weeks for the Week 11 Mexico City game against the Chargers or he’d return after the Week 12 bye week to face the Oakland Raiders in Week 13.
The latest reports have a more optimistic outlook on his recovery timeline. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mahomes could return to action in three weeks if not sooner. Schefter added a little buffer into his report, explaining the Chiefs would exercise extreme caution with Mahomes because they want both his knee and high ankle sprain to be healed before he returns.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen tacked on to Schefter’s report, claiming that Mahomes feels good and believes he’s week-to-week with this new injury.
So it seems that a return hinges on how Mahomes feels and what concurrent testing reveals. We already know that Mahomes is tough as nails, waving off the cart and walking off the field with minimal assistance following the injury. He’ll likely be reevaluated multiple times before his return to action but early indications seem to be that he could be back sooner than everyone initially expected. Weeks 9 and 10 of the NFL season aren’t yet out of the question for Mahomes.
