Latest injury update on Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire

There’s been yet another indication that Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire is making progress in his recovery from injury.

Edwards-Helaire suffered a hip injury and a high ankle sprain in the Week 15 showdown with the New Orleans Saints. It was reported shortly after the game that Edwards-Helaire would be done for the regular season with a shot to return during the playoffs with the divisional round as the target return day. The high ankle sprain appeared to be the more significant injury, hampering his return to action.

During the practice week leading up to Week 16, Andy Reid indicated that Edwards-Helaire was “ahead of schedule” in his recovery from injury. The latest update on the rookie sensation comes from his position coach Deland McCullough. He seemed taken aback by the progress made by Edwards-Helaire thus far.

“Seeing [Clyde Edwards-Helaire] walking around a couple of days after I said, ‘Man, what’s going on?’ He just dedicated himself to getting back at a high level,” McCullough said. “So really, just excited about what it appears to be as far as he’s going to be ready to come back here in a couple of weeks and we just continue to move forward.”

It’d seem that so long as he doesn’t suffer any sort of setbacks in the next few weeks, he should be tracking toward a return at the onset of the playoffs for Kansas City. It’s remarkable, especially given how bad that injury looked when it happened. It just shows the type of toughness and dedication that the Chiefs’ top rookie has.

Right now, both of the top running backs on the depth chart are dealing with injuries as Le’Veon Bell hasn’t practiced all week with knee swelling. Getting Edwards-Helaire back and healthy could be vital to team success in the divisional round of the playoffs.
