Latest HSE stats show eight fully vaccinated people admitted to hospital in 24 hour period

The latest HSE figures published this morning show an increase in the number of people being admitted to hospital for Covid treatment even though they are fully vaccinated.

Although numbers are small, there were eight fully vaccinated people admitted to hospitals with Covid in a 24-hour period on Wednesday.

Public health officials confirmed that there were a total of 86 people being treated for the virus in hospitals across the country as of 8 pm on Wednesday, while 22 patients were in intensive care (ICU).

The hospital with the highest number of Covid patients in Ireland is Letterkenny Hospital, where 12 people are being treated.

Mayo University Hospital has the second highest number, at 9, and Dublin’s St James’s Hospital is third with 8 Covid patients.

Of those people, 8 are fully vaccinated members of the public who were admitted within a 24-hour period on July 21.

Galway University Hospital currently has the highest number of vaccinated patients, after 4 people were referred to them on Wednesday, followed by St James's Hospital with 2.

The remaining two vaccinated patients were admitted in Letterkenny and Wexford Hospitals.

The figures also show that 7 of these vaccinated people are aged 50+, and one is in the 19-49 age range.

While concern is being raised among the public about the increased potential of testing positive for the Delta variant even after full vaccination, HSE Chief Operations Officer Dr Anne O’Connor earlier this week explained that those who are vaccinated and are in hospital with Covid, are not becoming as sick.

Meanwhile, HSE Chief Paul Reid confirmed this morning that over 5.3 million vaccines have now been administered in Ireland, meaning that 66% of the adult population is protected, while 80% of our remaining adults are partially covered.

Vaccines are now available to all of the Irish adult population via the online portal as health officials confirm we remain ahead of schedule with the doses.
