Latest Greater Manchester infection rates as Oldham reaches grim new milestone

Manchester has become the first area to record 20,000 positive coronavirus tests since the start of the pandemic.

It comes as the entire region saw a record number of positive tests in a day, the latest figures show.

But there are signs increases in infection rates may be starting to slow in some areas of the region.

On Monday there were 2,777 positive tests across Greater Manchester - the highest in a single day so far the data from Public Health England shows.

However it is important to point out there is widespread community testing which wasn't in place during the peak of the pandemic in April.

Oldham has become the area in our region to record an infection rate of over 700.

There were 1,688 positive cases in the borough in the seven days up to October 26, taking its rate per 100,000 of population to 703.5.

Whilst there has been a 28pc increase in Wigan, whose rate is now the second highest in the region at 687.4.

However the number of new cases has increased by just 199, eight percent, compared to the previous seven days.

Its rate is now the third lowest in the region at 498.3, but still over double the national average of 229.2.

Rochdale also saw a single digit week-on-week increase in cases of nine percent, with its rate now 591.7.

The Greater Manchester week-on-week percentage increase is now down to 23 per cent from over 30 per cent in previous four days.
