Latest Greater Manchester borough-by-borough infection rates as coronavirus cases continue to spike

Coronavirus infection rates across Greater Manchester are continuing to surge, the latest figures show.

Across the region rates are below the national average, which stood at 671.9 cases per 100,000 people, as of January 5.

But every town and city in Greater Manchester is seeing a spike in cases.

Wigan is the worst-affected area, with an infection rate of 459.7, according to the latest figures from Public Health England.

But the week-on-week growth of cases in the borough has dipped from 122% to 67%.

Trafford has the second highest infection rate at 455, while Manchester is currently experiencing the biggest rise in cases, up 82% week-on-week to 435.7 cases per 100,000 people.

Salford, up 78% to 407.6, and Oldham, up 77% to 384.6, also saw a huge rise in cases.

The figures come as the number of people to have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus exceeded 80,000.

On saturday a further 1,035 people were reported to have died within 28 days of testing positive for  Covid-19, the government has said.

It brings the UK total to 80,868.

But separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies for deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate, together with additional data on deaths that have occurred in recent days, show there have now been 95,000 deaths involving Covid-19 in the UK.

The number of people to have tested positive for Covid-19 has also exceeded three million - just over two months after the one million lab-confirmed case mark was reached on October 31.
