Latest Greater Manchester borough-by-borough Coronavirus infection rates as cases remain on the rise

The latest coronavirus infection rates have been revealed, as cases continue to rise across Greater Manchester.

Cases are increasing in all ten boroughs, with Wigan remaining the worst hit area across our region.

The statistics from Public Health England show that the average infection rate across England and in London has decreased.

They also show that the surge in cases across Greater Manchester appears to be slowing slightly.

As of January 7, there was 457 cases per 100,000 people in Wigan.

Cases remain on the rise in all of our boroughs week-on-week, ranging from the lowest rise of 23 per cent in Stockport, to a high of 55 per cent in Salford.

Oldham, which in November recorded the highest coronavirus rate in the country, has the lowest infection rate in Greater Manchester.

The rate in November, of 781.1 cases per 100,000 people, is more than double the current rate of 360.6 cases per 100,000 people.

It comes as the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, refused to rule out stricter restrictions being imposed as cases continue to increase.

At a Downing Street briefing, he said: "The NHS, more than ever before, needs everybody to be doing something right now – and that something is to follow the rules.

"I know there has been speculation about more restrictions, and we don’t rule out taking further action if it is needed, but it is your actions now that can make a difference.

"Stay at home, and please reduce all social contact that is not absolutely strictly necessary. That’s what is needed: act like you have the virus."
