Latest figures show 'concerning' rise in coronavirus cases in Bristol

A further five coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Bristol over the last 24 hours, bringing our total to 1,412.

The latest figures released by Public Health England today (Wednesday, August 19) show the number of daily patients being diagnosed with the deadly virus is significantly higher than just a few weeks ago.

On Sunday, nine new patients were diagnosed, which was the largest increase for roughly six weeks. A further six patients were added yesterday (Tuesday, August 18).

The last time Bristol's cases surpassed nine was on July 3, when the government updated its data to include tests carried out in community mobile centres as well as hospitals.

And throughout July and most of August, the average daily increase was around two or three.

Meanwhile, North Somerset recorded an increase of one, bringing the district's total to 929.

Cases in Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire remained the same, at 368 and 785 respectively.

The figures come on the same day that mayor Marvin Rees warned Bristol's rise was a 'cause for concern'.

Marvin Rees said 35 new cases were recorded in the past seven days, which was “up from 10 before”.

He said: “There was an increase there. What we are saying is our numbers are still low, but it is a cause for concern."

Nationally, 812 new cases were recorded today, bringing the UK's total to 321, 098.

Covid deaths

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a coronavirus-related death since the beginning of July.

However, four deaths were recorded in care homes in and around Bristol during the first two weeks of August.

Across the UK, there's been 41, 397 deaths following a daily rise of 16.
