Latest figures show rise in Covid-19 cases across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

The latest Government figures show the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nottinghamshire has risen to 43.

As of Thursday, March 18 no more cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the city, with the figure remaining at 14.

However, in Nottinghamshire, there has been one new confirmed case, rising by one to 29.

It comes as news that a third Nottingham patient at Queen's Medical Centre died on Wednesday, March 18 after testing positive for the virus.

Hospital bosses confirmed the patient was elderly and had an underlying health condition.

Across the UK, the number of confirmed cases has risen to more than 3,200 and the death toll as surpassed 140.

The Government also announced that all schools in England would remain closed after Friday, March 20 until further notice in further efforts to slow the spread of the virus.

In the House of Commons on Wednesday, March 18 Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson told MPs: "I want to provide parents, students and staff with the certainty they need.

"After schools shut their gates on Friday afternoon they will remain closed until further notice.

"This will be for all children except to those of key workers and where children who are most vulnerable."

Boris Johnson said the Government's measures were already slowing the spread of coronavirus as he confirmed that schools would close from Friday.

Addressing a Downing Street press conference, the Prime Minister added that he thinks we can "turn the tide" on coronavirus within the next 12 weeks.

He said: "I think, looking at it all, that we can turn the tide within the next 12 weeks and I’m absolutely confident that we can send coronavirus packing in this country.

"But only if we all take the steps that we’ve outlined, that is vital, that’s how we’re going to reduce the peak and once we’ve achieved that and I think that we will, if we take the steps I’ve said, then the scientific progress that we’ve been making will really start coming into play."
