Latest figures give update on Merseyside's coronavirus death toll

Merseyside saw just four deaths from Covid-19 during the second week of August, new figures have revealed.

The total, reported by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday, is the region’s joint-lowest weekly death toll of the coronavirus crisis after the previous week also saw just four deaths.

Two of the week’s deaths occurred in Liverpool, up from one the previous week, while Sefton and St Helens saw one death each.

The death in St Helens was the only one to occur in a care home that week.

Wirral recorded its second week without a Covid-19 death while Knowsley has gone four weeks without a death connected to the virus.

Halton also recorded no deaths in the second week of August, and has seen only one death in the previous four weeks.

The statistics, issued weekly, include all deaths that occurred up to August 14 and were registered by August 22 in which Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. This means the virus was either the main cause or a contributing factor to the death.

In total, the city region has seen 1,798 deaths from coronavirus since the crisis began in March - a mortality rate of 115 deaths per 100,000 residents.

While Liverpool has the highest total number of deaths with 582, it is Wirral that has been the worst affected. Its 440 deaths mean that 135.8 people have died for every 100,000 residents in the borough.

Although deaths remained low in early August, the same period has seen a rise in the number of cases of Covid-19 across Merseyside.

In the first two weeks of the month there were 314 confirmed new cases of coronavirus in the Liverpool City Region, compared to 202 during the last two weeks of July.

In light of the rising cases, public health officials have warned residents to remain vigilant and continue to follow guidance on social distancing, mask wearing and hand washing. However, the total number of cases is still well below the levels seen in areas that have gone back into lockdown like Leicester and Greater Manchester.
