Latest EFL plan would see big change to relegation places in 2020/21 Championship season

Leagues One and Two could be decided by the top eight sides from each division taking part in a mini-tournament to decide who is promoted.

The idea is one of three contingency plans being considered by the EFL, Sky Sports reports , and was presented during a meeting of club captains and the league on Friday.

The EFL is committed to completing the season across all three of their divisions but the challenges of doing so increase the lower down the league pyramid you go, putting League One and League Two at risk.

Significantly, none of the three plans being discussed would see any side relegated - with another proposal seeing the top-two in each division promoted ‘on merit’ and two extra teams would be relegated in the 2020/21 campaign, including in the Championship.

No decisions will be taken until the government sets out plans for how the present lockdown will proceed after May 7.

Below is the top eight from League One and League Two, who would take part in the mini-tournament if the proposal is used, which also shows the top-two teams who would be promoted ‘on merit’ if that proposal is utilised.

League One

1. Coventry City

2. Rotherham United

3. Oxford United

4. Portsmouth

5. Fleetwood Town

6. Peterborough United

7. Sunderland

8. Wycombe Wanderers

League Two

1. Crewe Alexandra

2. Swindon Town

3. Plymouth Argyle

4. Exeter City

5. Cheltenham Town

6. Colchester United

7. Northampton Town

8. Port Vale
