Latest covid numbers for all Liverpool areas as infection rate falls again

Liverpool's Covid-19 infection rate is continuing to fall.

The city saw an explosion of coronavirus cases following the Christmas period and in early January had a case rate of more than 1,000 per 100,000 people.

This number has been falling consistently in recent days, with lockdown restrictions now appearing to take effect.

Data running up to January 22 shows that the total number of confirmed cases for the last 7 days is 2,871, a decrease of 1,327 cases on the previous week.

This gives a current infection rate for the city of 577 cases per 100,000 people.

While this is a significant reduction on the peak of cases earlier this month, it is still a very high number and indicates that there is still a lot of the virus circulating in the city.

The latest positivity testing rate of 18.9% backs this up.

Of the 2,871 confirmed cases in Liverpool in the last seven days, 501 (17.5%) were detected using Lateral Flow Testing (LFT) kits at the city's asymptomatic testing centres.

The majority of cases (50%) were in those aged under 40 years, whereas 31% cases were in those aged 40-59 yrs.

Of all the confirmed cases in the last seven days 52% were female and 48% were male.

Of those cases where ethnicity was given, 86% people were recorded as White British and 14% people were from a Black and Minority Ethnic background.

Compared to the previous week the rate of new infections in the city has slightly decreased, however the seven-day rate remains very high.

The wards with the largest number of confirmed cases are Yew Tree (173 cases), Speke-Garston (148 cases), Fazakerley (147 cases), Norris Green (136 cases), Kirkdale (126 cases), Riverside (125 cases), Princes Park (119 cases), Clubmoor (119 cases), Tuebrook and Stoneycroft (111 cases) and Anfield (100 cases).

Unfortunately, while infection rates are dropping, we are now seeing a surge in virus hospital admissions and deaths from the disease.

Liverpool's main university hospital trust now has significantly more virus patients being cared for than at any other time during the pandemic.

The latest data shows that between 16-22 January there were 189 registered deaths in Liverpool, of which 44% were Covid-19 deaths.
