Latest coronavirus infection rates for Greater Manchester as numbers surge

Coronavirus infection rates in Greater Manchester have surged by 90pc in a week.

And cases have doubled in seven days in Wigan, Manchester and Salford according to the latest figures from Public Health England.

The rate of infection in Greater Manchester (412.7 cases per 100,000 people) remains below the national average (671.9), as of January 4.

But escalating rates of infection are appearing in every borough of the region.

In Wigan, the area with the highest rates of transmission in the region, cases increased by 122pc in a week to 478.3.

Rates of infection for every other region are as followed:

Trafford - 468.5 (up 74pc)

Bury - 426.7 (up 57pc)

Stockport - 424.3 (up 76pc)

Manchester - 422.3 (up 101pc)

Salford - 403 (up 107pc)

Rochdale - 400.2 (up 75pc)

Oldham - 371.1 (up 86pc)

Tameside - 363.4 (up 86pc)

Bolton - 343.9 (up 92pc)

Hospitals across the region have started postponing cancer operations as fears grow that Greater Manchester could run out of intensive care beds due to spiralling cases.

Some cancer surgery has already been cancelled at the last minute due to a lack of critical care beds.

Across the board, trusts are beginning the process of rescheduling cancer operations not deemed to be the most urgent.

The region's mayor Andy Burnham revealed yesterday there were 119 people in intensive care units and 922 in general hospital beds with Covid-19 on January 5.

The news comes as a survey conducted by the Manchester Evening News revealed four out of five readers agree with the full lockdown.

The survey of 8,751 people on the website found 81pc were in favour of measures introduced on Monday (January 4).
