Latest coronavirus infection rates across Greater Manchester - cases are falling faster regionally than nationally

Greater Manchester’s coronavirus infection rate is falling faster than in England as a whole.

The rate of 105.4 cases per 100,000 population in the week ending March 2 is still higher than the national average of 69.9.

But here the rate is down 37 per cent in the last week, according to the latest data from Public Health England.

A total of 2,989 people tested positive for coronavirus across the conurbation in the week ending March 2.

That’s 1,769 less cases than in the previous week.

At the start of the national lockdown on January 5, the infection rate in Greater Manchester was 427.6 cases per 100,000.

The rate peaked on January 8 at 461.5. Since then, the infection rate in the region has fallen to 105.4 cases per 100,000 - a drop of 77 per cent.

The death rate also appears to be falling across Greater Manchester.

In total, 74 deaths where Covid-19 was recorded on the death certificate were reported in the week ending March 2.

That’s 28 fewer deaths than in the previous seven days.

A total of 6,541 people in Greater Manchester have died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test during the pandemic.

Rates are continuing to fall across all ten Greater Manchester boroughs.

Rochdale still has the highest rate with 135.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending March 2.

Trafford has the lowest rate at 72.9 cases per 100,000 people during that same period.

Stockport saw the biggest drop with cases going down by 47 per cent compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 96.4 cases per 100,000 population.

Nationally, Leicester has the highest coronavirus infection rate - 166 cases per 100,000 people - with 588 confirmed cases in the week ending March 2.
