Latest coronavirus hotspots in Wigan and Leigh revealed - here's where had the most cases last week

The latest coronavirus hotspots in Wigan and Leigh have been revealed as the number of infections in the borough continues to increase.

Data from Public Health England (PHE) shows that 16 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Lowton in the week from September 11 to 17.

A total of 15 new cases were also recorded in Winstanley, while 12 people tested positive in Lowton Common.

Areas to the south of the borough appear to be among the worst affected, with Leigh North and Leigh West both recording 10 new cases each.

Meanwhile, there were nine new infections in both Astley, Blackmoor & Mosley Common and Tyldesley South.

There has been a huge increase in the number of cases across the borough over the past week.

The spike led to Wigan being placed on coronavirus 'red alert' last week.

The borough's infection rate currently stands at 90.4 per 100,000 people, however the increase in cases has been worse in some areas than others.

Areas such as Abram & Bickershaw, Standish North and Golborne all recorded between zero and two new infections last week.

Wigan is the only borough within Greater Manchester not currently subject to any additional restrictions from the government.

That is despite it having a higher infection rate than both Trafford and Stockport.

Just a few weeks ago, it had the lowest infection rate in Greater Manchester and was below the national average.

When the region was placed under local restrictions on July 30, local leaders in Wigan argued that the low infection rate in the town meant the extra measures were unfair.

This argument was eventually accepted by the government and the Greater Manchester restrictions were lifted in Wigan on August 26.

However, the number of cases has steadily grown in recent weeks.
