Latest coronavirus case figures for Bristol and surrounding areas

All four areas across the Bristol region reported a rise in coronavirus cases today.

According to the latest figures by Public Health England, a further eight patients were diagnosed with the virus in Bristol, taking the total to 1,545.

In North Somerset three more were recorded, taking the area's total up to 971.

While one patient tested positive for the virus in South Gloucestershire, which now has 858 cases.

Bath and North East Somerset reported six more cases, the total there is 426.

UK-wide there were 1,813 new cases were confirmed in a single day, bringing the nation's total to 344,164.

Covid deaths

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a new death over the past 24 hours.

Southmead Hospital reported a coronavirus-related death on Tuesday August 25, which was the first in the city for two months.

Nationally, 12 further Covid-related deaths were recorded, bringing the UK's total to 41,549.

R rate

The South West's R rate is now the second highest in the country, peaking at 0.8-1.1.

London is the only region with a higher rate, with 0.9-1.1.

If R is below one, it means the virus is shrinking because each carrier passes it, on average, to less than one other person.

And if it is above one, the virus is spreading exponentially because with each stage, it is carried by more people.

But the South West's numbers are too low for the R or growth rate to inform policy decisions, the Government says.
