Latest comments from Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste Leo Varadkar on Covid cases and lockdown

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said Ireland won't go to level four or five unless it is completely necessary.

NPHET pushed for the jump to a full lockdown last weekend but the Government don't want to make the move unless they really have to.

Although Covid-19 cases rose by 617 on Friday and Dr Tony Holohan and other experts are pushing for further restrictions.

Here's what both the Tanaiste and Taoiseach have said regarding the pandemic today;

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar

Speaking with Bobby Kerr on Newstalk's Down to Business, Varadkar said he was certain we wouldn't go to the last two levels unless it was "completely necessary".

He said: "One of the tough decisions I made when I was Taoiseach back in March was to lockdown the country and that resulted in hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs and going on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment - which we created in order to give them some income support.

"And it's heartbreaking for me to think that just in the last week or so, we had to close down hospitality.

"Seeing 60,000 people back on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment, laid off for the second time in a year, and no government wants to be making those decisions and we don't make them lightly.

"And we certainly won't go to Level 4 or Level 5 unless we believe it's necessary."

Taoiseach Micheal Martin

The Taoiseach has not spoken about the Covid situation in recent days but is asking people to look out for one another during this pandemic.

Mr Martin tweeted on Saturday morning: "We all need to look after ourselves and each other, particularly in the middle of a global pandemic.

"Let’s try to check in on friends, family or neighbours who may be feeling lonely or anxious. Looking after our mental health is more important than ever."
