Latest Chelsea transfer news: Frank Lampard demands Willian stay, transfer area identified

Chelsea were dealt a blow in their quest to secure Champions League football as they lost 1-0 to Newcastle United.

Isaac Hayden's 94th-minute goal secured all three points for Steve Bruce's men, condemning the Blues to defeat.

The result further hammered home the need for extra January recruits, with Chelsea yet to sign anyone this month despite their transfer ban being lifted.

With Olivier Giroud seemingly set for an exit, whilst other members of the squad have uncertain futures, Frank Lampard could do with a signing or two to bolster his squad.

Here, we round-up the day's latest Chelsea transfer rumours.

Frank Lampard not closing the door on January transfers

Lampard wants Willian stay

Lamprd has told the Chelsea board to pull out all the stops to convince Willian to sign a new contract at the club.

The Brazilian's current deal runs out in the summer and he is yet to commit his future to an extended stay.

According to  The Standard , Lampard wants the Chelsea hierarchy to ensure the 31-year-old signs on for next season.

Willian is thought to be demanding a two-year contract, plus a significant increase on his weekly wage of around £110,000-a-week.

Lampard identifies where Chelsea need strengthening

Lampard has once again reiterated that Chelsea must sign quality at the top end of the pitch to ensure they turn their dominance into points.

The Blues controlled large portions of their clash against Newcastle but failed to show a killer-instinct before losing 1-0.

"If we are looking for people to bring in to the areas to win games when you are controlling it, it is scoring goals," he told Sky Sports.

"We need to be clinical and we can't make any bones about that. I'm pleased with the players we've got but we can't work any more in training on finishing.

"We need that killer instinct in front of goal. We need to score more goals if we want to get to where we need to get."

Giroud deal on hold

Inter Milan have put a deal to sign Giroud on the backburner.

The Serie A side were also trying to force through a swap deal with AS Roma that would see Matteo Politano and Leonardo Spinazzola swap clubs.

However, that deal has collapsed at the last second, with  Gazzetta Dello Sport  reporting that they have put the Giroud deal on hold whilst they try to resurrect the swap deal.

Giroud, of course, is out of contract in the summer and was left out of Chelsea's squad to face Newcastle.
