Latest Championship forecast tips Leeds United for success and agony for Bristol City

It was a hectic crop of Championship fixtures on Saturday, with Leeds the only team in the top seven to pick up three points.

Every other team in the top seven dropped points, with Nottingham Forest and West Brom playing out a dramatic draw and Fulham being the subject of a 3-0 drubbing by Barnsley.

And in the latest Championship prediction, Bristol City are being tipped to agonisingly miss out on the play offs spots on goal difference, with Preston North End grabbing the final play off spot.

And after Leeds beat City at Elland Road, Marcelo Bielsa's side are being tipped for success despite their recent poor form.

Three wins in 12 isn't enough to knock them out of the running, and FiveThirtyEight predicts them and West Brom will still grab the automatic promotion spots.

Despite Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston all dropping points, the four of them are all tipped to grab the four play offs spots, with Preston and Bristol City finishing level on points.

The latest Championship prediction (FiveThirtyEight)

Towards the bottom of the table, it's Barnsley who are predicted to finish bottom of the table despite their 3-0 win over the Cottagers.

Luton and Wigan will join them in relegation to League One, with Stoke, Charlton and Huddersifeld all being saved, albiet only by a six point gap between them.

How it works

Five Thirty Eight predict the outcome for the season using SPI ratings, which the website says are their best estimate of a team's overall strength. Each team is given an attacking rating that represents the number of goals it is expected to score against an average team, and a defensive rating to represent the amount of goals it would concede.

Those ratings produce an overall SPI rating, which represents the percentage of points it would be expected to take on average from a game. Those ratings are then compared to an opposition's rating to simulate the outcome of a match.

From that, it is possible to simulate the outcome of a whole season.
