Latest case numbers for Omicron in Leeds as 'circuit breaker' lockdown considered

Concerns continue to mount about the latest wave of coronavirus brought about by the Omicron variant as Christmas approaches.

New measures are being brought in to control the spread and the warnings of the rapid rate that the new variant is spreading get greater each day.

The country has been urged to reconsider having nights out in the lead up to Christmas and recommended to prioritise events with those closest to them.

Yesterday (Saturday) the UK recorded a further 90,418 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases and a "major incident" was declared in London due to the rapid spread of the virus.

Across Yorkshire, the latest data shows that the rates of infection are increasing but are lower than the majority of the country, with some areas such as Scarborough Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees having some of the lowest rates in England.

In Leeds, the latest data shows that the rate of infection is 382.5 cases per 100,000 people after 3,055 positive tests were recorded in the week leading up to December 13.

The figures are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

Data for the most recent four days (December 14-18) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
