Latest blow for Irish heading to France as gov restricts restaurants and more to those with Covid certs

France's restaurants, bars, cafes, and shopping centres will be restricted to those who are vaccinated or have proof of negative PCR tests within 72 hours.

The strict new measures are being brought in as a way to curb the most recent spread of the virus, as the Delta variant moves rapidly through France.

President Emmanuel Macron warned his nation that they are expecting a major increase in case numbers and fatalities by August, and said the only way they can stop this is by ensuring as many people as possible are vaccinated by that time.

"The country is facing a strong resumption of the epidemic touching all our territory," he said during a televised address.

"The equation is simple. The more we vaccinate, the less space we leave this virus to circulate."

Similar to Ireland, Macron confirmed that they will extend their Covid certs so people can gain safe entry to indoor restaurants, but added that this will also apply to bars, cafes, transport and shopping centres.

Meanwhile, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Irish passengers can still head to France on holidays from July 19, with ‘a high degree of caution’.

Those who hold an EU digital covid cert for vaccination and recent recovery will be granted entry to all areas of society, just like citizens.

If you are entering France without an EU cert the rules for entry will depend on the country you are flying in from.

However, as of July 9, Ireland is on France’s ‘green list’ for entry.

If you are travelling to France from a green country and are not fully vaccinated, all passengers aged 11 and over will have to present a negative PCR or antigen test taken less than 72 hours prior to departure.

Non-vaccinated passengers are also required to carry a completed and signed Sworn Statement before heading off - you can find this form here.
