Latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Torres battle, Martinez claim, Wenger on Fabregas decision

The domestic transfer window is now closed, and for Arsenal, their attention will now turn to January.

The Gunners, unsurprisingly, had a quiet domestic-only window, with a few players leaving on loan deals, but no incomings.

However, the rumour mill is still very busy as Mikel Arteta looks to continue his side’s progression by bringing in new faces in January.

Here are the latest Arsenal transfer stories.

Arsenal eye La Liga defender

Arsenal and Manchester United are set to battle it out for Villarreal defender Pau Torres in January, according to Spanish news outlet Todofichajes.

The 23-year-old is a wanted man, after a string of impressive performances for the Yellow Submarine in La Liga.

Unai Emery’s Villarreal are willing to let the £35m-rated defender leave the Estadio de la Cerámica, with a January move on the cards.

The report states that Arsenal are looking at signing Torres, but could face competition from Man United, who also admire the centre-back.

Martinez says Arteta wanted to keep him

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has claimed that Arteta wanted to keep him at the Emirates Stadium.

The Argentine shot-stopper signed for Aston Villa in the summer, which surprised a few supporters, after a host of strong performances when Bernd Leno was injured in the latter stages of last season.

Martinez told DAZN (via HITC ) that Arteta wanted him to stay in London: “(Arteta) didn’t know who was going to be number one. And, faced with that doubt after winning two titles, I decided to leave the club after so many years.

“It was my decision. Arteta wanted to retain me. He even offered me a new contract and, for that, I was super grateful to him and to the club. But my decision had already been made.”

Wenger explains why Gunners did not re-sign Fabregas

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has explained why the Gunners did not re-sign Cesc Fabregas before he moved to Chelsea.

Fabregas left the North London club in 2011 to join Barcelona, before moving back to the Premier League and signing for the Blues.

Wenger explained why Arsenal didn’t re-sign the Spaniard, when speaking to The Athletic (via Metro): “It was general guidance for me to make the players realise that if you leave here, you don’t come back.

“It was a way to retain the players who wanted to see if the grass was greener elsewhere. I did it for Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell, Jens Lehmann, but they were different. The young players who left I didn’t like to do it.”
