Latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Mikel Arteta's first signing, £10m deal, Granit Xhaka update

The Mikel Arteta era has begun at Arsenal and the Spaniard will want to make a big impact in his first month at the club.

The January transfer window offers the perfect opportunity for Arteta to tweak his Arsenal squad and get rid of some of the problematic players.

This time of year close to the January window is when the rumour mill goes into overdrive and here is the latest Arsenal transfer round-up below.

Xhaka transfer latest

Ever since Granit Xhaka took centre stage in the draw against Crystal Palace when he was booed off the field and shouted obscenities at Arsenal fans, a departure has been likely.

There has been interest from Inter Milan and the Switzerland international has spoken about how he is undecided over his future.

Now the latest link is with Hertha Berlin. Sky in Germany say that the Bundesliga side are eager to sign the midfielder. Bild also say that Xhaka could leave for Germany.

Arsenal want bargain Mertens deal

Arsenal have enquired about a January transfer window move for Napoli striker Dries Mertens.

Napoli are reportedly willing to let the 32-year-old leave the club and Manchester United are said to be interested as well.

Mertens is in the final year of his deal at Napoli but is unlikely to land a new contract.

The Express say that Arsenal could sign Mertens for the bargain price of £10m.

Gunners close in on Szoboszlai deal

But the first signing that Arteta makes for Arsenal in January could be Dominik Szoboszlai, according to reports.

The Red Bull Salzburg midfield has been watched by the Arsenal scouts during the club's impressive Champions League campaign.

With Mesut Ozil on the verge of a potential loan exit to Fenerbahce, the Hungarian could even be a replacement for the playmaker.
