Latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Major Aouar boost, Umtiti up for sale, Boateng competition

Arsenal return to Premier League action on Sunday evening, as they welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners should be full of confidence after a fantastic week, beating Manchester United last weekend, followed up by a Europa League victory over Molde on Thursday.

Mikel Arteta 's focus right now will be on setting up his current side, but off-the-pitch, the London-based club may be keeping an eye on the January transfer window, which is now getting close to opening.

With that being said, here, we have gathered the latest Arsenal transfer stories.

Lyon could be forced to sell Aouar

Lyon general manager Vincent Ponsot has hinted that the French club could be forced to sell some of their key players in the upcoming future - which could include reported Arsenal target Houssem Aouar.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for the France international over the summer and now Ponsot has spoken about the Ligue 1 club's financial situation in the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lyon general manager told L'Equipe (via Sport Witness ): "The economic situation is catastrophic for the football world. We are significantly impacted.

"On the market, there were two phases: reducing the number of players, which we did very well, and a second part concerning the players who could potentially leave.

Finally, we could have transferred some of them, with a discount on the price.

"But even with the Covid impact, we decided to postpone."

Umtiti put up for sale

Arsenal-linked Samuel Umtiti has been placed on the transfer list by Barcelona, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

The same publication reported back in July that the Gunners, West Ham United and Everton were all interested in signing the French central defender.

Ronald Koeman's side are in need of some funds, so they have placed Umtiti, Ousmane Dembele, Junior Firpo, Martin Braithwaite, and Carles Alena all up for sale.

As it stands, Arteta has David Luiz, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi, Gabriel Magalhaes, Pablo Mari, William Saliba, and Calum Chambers to pick from in his Premier League squad.

Spurs competition for Boateng

Arsenal are interested in signing Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng, but now face competition from Tottenham Hotspur.

That's according to Bild (via Sport Witness ), who are reporting that Boateng is set to leave on a free next summer, with the former Manchester City defender refusing to negotiate a new deal with the Champions League winners.

The German outlet claim that the Gunners were interested in the 32-year-old over the summer, and remain keen despite signing Gabriel and Saliba.

However, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is now "watching the development" of the Boateng situation and could make an offer.
