Latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Gunners lead race for defender, battle with Man United for star

There are two-and-a-half months until the summer window opens, and clubs will be forming their transfer strategy.

With some prospective targets, Arsenal might already be falling behind. But there is also plenty of hope around for the future.

Here are the latest updates and rumours for the players Unai Emery's side have been linked with in the press.

Arsenal have finally found a use for Shkodran Mustafi - at least until the summer

Samuel Umtiti

Arsenal are said to be “definitely on pole” to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti in the summer.

The French international could leave La Liga this season after falling behind Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique in the pecking order.

And Roma are said to be considering a move for the 25-year-old as a replacement for Kostas Manolas, who is being targeted by Manchester United and has a release clause of €36m.

Umtiti is described as a “dream signing” for Roma by  Tuttomercatoweb  should the Serie A side lose their Greek centre-back, but they also state that Unai Emery’s side are leading the chase for the World Cup winner.

David Neres

Arsenal and Manchester United are both reportedly battling for the signing of Ajax youngster David Neres.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form for the Dutch side this season, with goals against Real Madrid and Juventus in the Champions League.

And both Premier League sides are said to be keen on making a £45m move for the Brazilian, with Chelsea and Everton said to be keeping tabs on the situation by the  Sun .

Arsenal scouts will be watching him in action again at Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday evening, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Ismael Bennacer

Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly taken steps in his bid to bring former Arsenal midfielder Ismael Bennacer to Napoli.

The 21-year-old is currently playing for Empoli after leaving the Gunners in 2017, but his recent performances have increased links with a move back to north London, especially with a buy-back clause and sell-on percentage included in the deal that took him to Italy.

However,  Le Buteur  claim that Napoli have taken concrete steps to bring him to the club, with Ancelotti reportedly telling the midfielder directly of his intentions to sign him.

Napoli are reportedly leading the race having heard of interest from Arsenal, and are considering offering a cash-plus-two-players deal for the Algeria international - though it’s not revealed who those players would be.
