Latest Arsenal transfer rumours: Besiktas' Elneny plan, Gunners want Willian, Smalling update

Arsenal kept their faint hopes of securing Champions League football for next season alive with a narrow 1-0 win over West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

A second half strike from Alexandre Lacazette, which was awarded by VAR, was enough to seal all three points for the Gunners, who are eight points short of the top-four.

But the Gunners could decrease that gap to five points on Wednesday evening when they travel to the Etihad Stadium to face a Manchester City side who will still be feeling the pain of having lost the Manchester derby to cross-city rivals United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

However, even if Arsenal were to move to within five points of Chelsea on Wednesday night, they will still face an uphill struggle to secure a UEFA Champions League spot for next season.

A busy summer of change looms at the Emirates Stadium for head coach Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard no doubt eager to bolster his squad as much as he can.

Arsenal 1-0 West Ham: Mikel Arteta reacts

With that in mind, here is a round-up of the day's very latest Arsenal transfer news.

Besiktas want second loan deal for Elneny

Turkish giants Besiktas have asked Arsenal if they can sign midfielder Mohamed Elneny on loan for a second season, according to Turkish Football.

Elneny joined the Super Lig club on loan for the 2019/20 campaign last August and has made a strong impression for the Black-Whites.

As part of the loan deal they signed him on last summer, Besiktas have the opportunity to sign the Egyptian on a permanent basis this summer for €18milllion. But financial issues mean they cannot afford to complete the signing.

However, the Turkish giants have another plan, as look to try and sign him on loan for another season instead.

Gunners keen on Willian

Arsenal are keen on signing out-of-contract Chelsea winger Willian this summer as Arteta plans to make wholesale changes to his squad at the Emirates Stadium, report 10 Sport.

The Brazilian is poised to leave Stamford Bridge this summer as he shows no signs of signing a new contract, meaning he would be available on a free-transfer.

But Arsenal will face a stern battle to land the Brazil international, who joined Chelsea back in 2013, as a host of other clubs are chasing his signature.

The 31-year-old is a target for Manchester United, Barcelona and PSG amongst others.

Arsenal in pole position to land Smalling

The Express are reporting that Arsenal are willing to meet Manchester United's valuation to sign central defender Chris Smalling this summer.

Smalling, who joined United back in 2010, is currently out on loan at Italian club Roma, for whom he has enjoyed a solid season.

And his form in Serie A has not gone unnoticed by Premier League sides, with the Gunners and Tottenham Hotspur both keen on signing him.

Roma, too, are also keen to keep hold of Smalling, but they are struggling to meet Manchester United's £25million valuation. Arsenal, however, are ready to match it.
