Latest Arsenal transfer rumours: £18m for Smalling, Aubameyang 'to quit', Spurs move for target

The January transfer window will soon be open for business.

And there is sure to be a flurry of action from Premier League clubs looking to strengthen their squads in time for the second half of the season.

Arsenal are not normally big spenders in the winter window and they may look at the flop loan signing of Denis Suarez last January as a reason not to do any business this time around.

However, for the supporters, there is plenty of work that needs to be done on the squad, with the Gunners languishing in mid-table so far this season.

Will Freddie Ljungberg be given funds, or will there be a new man in charge before the window opens?

Here we take a look at the latest Arsenal transfer rumours doing the rounds.

Aubameyang to quit

If there was one player in the Arsenal ranks the fans would be loathe to lose it would surely be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

While Arsenal stutter and stumble, the Gabon forward often still manages to score goals and dig the side out of trouble when called upon.

But he is out of contract at the Emirates in 2020, with no breakthrough in talks over a new deal.

And reports in the Mirror suggest that he has ceased negotiations with the club as he is ready to quit and move on elsewhere next summer, for what would be a cut-price fee.

Chris Smalling deal

Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Chris Smalling from Manchester United.

The defender is on loan with Roma this season and has turned in a number of impressive displays.

The Mirror report that Arsenal scouts were in attendance watching him keep a clean sheet against Inter Milan on Friday night, although they were not the only ones.

Everton and Leicester are also thought to be keeping tabs on his situation at Old Trafford with a fee in the region of £18million mooted.

Demiral competition

Arsenal have been the team most heavily linked with a move for out-of-favour Juventus defender Merih Demiral.

The Turkish defender has struggled for game time under Maurizio Sarri at Juve and is ready to cut his time at the Serie A giants short after less than one season.

There were reports that Juve wanted Hector Bellerin in a swap deal with Arsenal, but the Gunners may not have it all their own way.

According to the Sun , Spurs officials have contacted the player's agent about a potential January transfer.
