Latest Arsenal transfer news: Defender deal rejected, Ozil exit blocked, shock £5m move

Arsenal remain marooned in mid-table after another disappointing display against Burnley.

Mikel Arteta's side remain a work in progress, with the rest of the season seen as a period to put in place building blocks for next term.

In the transfer window, Arteta was able to confirm two January recruits, signing Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares on loan deals to see them through until the summer.

Speculation is still circling around the futures of several key Arsenal players, whilst they continue to be linking with potential summer targets.

With that in mind, here is the day's latest Arsenal transfer news.

Mikel Arteta: We were so sloppy

Arsenal missed out on Magalhaes

Arsenal and Everton missed out on the signing of Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes in the January transfer window.

The Brazilian defender was attracting interest from both Premier League clubs but the Ligue 1 side were adamant they wouldn't sell mid-season.

According to French magazine Le 10 Sport, both clubs could return for his signature in the summer.

Arsenal instead completed a deal for Mari from Flamengo.

Ozil exit blocked

Arsenal blocked a dramatic deadline day sale of Mesut Ozil.

The Mirror reports that a Qatari club offered the Gunners a deal to sell Ozil but they turned it down due to a lack of time to source a replacement.

It is understood that Ozil would have been willing to listen to the offer, as would Mikel Arteta, with a suitor willing to foot the 31-year-old playmaker's hefty wage.

Ozil is under contract at Arsenal until 2021.

£5m Cedric deal

Southampton were left shocked by Arsenal's willingness to do a deal for Cedric Soares.

The Gunners agreed a loan deal for the Saints' right-back, who is out of contract in the summer.

The deal will cost Arsenal £5million overall, including a loan fee and wages.

While they saw no logic in Arsenal’s pursuit aside from certain relationships between the Gunners and Soares’ representatives, according to  The Athletic, Arsenal bosses believe they will get exactly what they wanted from the transfer market once Soares returns to full fitness.
