Latest Arsenal injury news: Mikel Arteta delivers update on Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta are sweating on the fitness of Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari.

Both players went off injured before the half hour mark as the Gunners returned to Premier League action with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Xhaka's evening was brought to an end after just eight minutes as he collided with teammate Matteo Guendouzi before being replaced by Dani Ceballos.

The Switzerland international was soon joined in the changing room by Mari as the on-loan defender pulled up while chasing after the ball and looked to have suffered a hamstring problem.

As well as the heavy defeat, the status of the two players was a major talking point after the game and the Arsenal head coach confirmed the latest.

"They are getting assessed at the moment," Arteta said in his post-match press conference."We will now something more in the morning."

Mari's injury means the north London outfit are facing somewhat of a defensive crisis ahead of upcoming games against Brighton and Southampton.

Fellow centre-back Sokratis didn't travel to Manchester because of injury, while David Luiz will serve a two-game suspension after being shown a straight red card in the build up to Kevin De Bruyne's penalty.

The Brazilian, who was at fault for Raheem Sterling's opener, did face the music at full-time as he owned up to his mistakes in a revealing interview with Sky Sports.

"It's simple. It's not the teams' fault, it's my fault, I take the decision to play and I should take another different decision in the last two months," he admitted.

"The team I thought did really well, especially with the ten men.

"The coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it's just my fault.

"I should take another different decision in the last two months, I didn't, it was all about my contract. I have now 14 days to be here. That's it, so today it was my fault."
