Late Rangers penalty denies St Mirren second Old Firm win of the season

A dramatic late penalty denied St Mirren a second Old Firm win in the space of just three months.

The Buddies looked set to pick up a hard-fought victory against Rangers after Jonah Ayunga's close-range effort put them ahead just after the half-time break.

VAR was to make yet another crucial intervention in Paisley, with referee Kevin Clancy initially deeming Ryan Kent to have dived in the Saints' box under pressure from Marcus Fraser.

After checking on the pitch-side monitor, the man in black changed his decision to allow James Tavernier to sweep home an equaliser from the spot.

Despite the late disappointment the home support still celebrated the draw which saw them stretch their unbeaten home run to an impressive eight games heading into the long World Cup break.

Qatar-bound Keanu Baccus was named among the Saints' substitutes, with Greg Kiltie keeping his place after his goalscoring efforts against St Johnstone.

Robinson kept faith with the same front pairing that toppled Celtic 2-0 in September, with Ayunga and Curtis Main leading the line.

St Mirren had an early shout for a penalty waved away as Kiltie was eased off the ball by James Sands. Referee Clancy wasn't interested.

Malik Tillman gave the hosts an early scare, dancing past Declan Gallagher before dragging a shot narrowly wide with the goal at his mercy.

Alfredo Morelos blazed well over the bar on the ten-minute mark, with the Saints comfortable in the early stages.

Scott Wright drew the first serious save from Trevor Carson, with the Buddies' number one pulling off a brilliant stop from the attacker's powerful header to deny Rangers an opener.

Ryan Strain got the better of Kent on numerous occasions on the left wing to keep the visitors at bay, with the 25-year-old showing no signs of ill-effect after the disappointment of missing out on Australia's World Cup squad.

Wright sauntered through the heart of the St Mirren midfield before slotting wide in yet another warning sign for the Saints.

O'Hara tried his luck from distance as he looked to bag his second wondergoal in the space of four days. After some nice build-up play between Main and Kiltie, the ball dropped to the stand-in skipper but he curled his effort looping over the bar from 30 yards.

The home side were gradually starting to make more of an impact in the final third. Strain cleverly played Kiltie into space in the box, with the playmaker flashing the ball across the six-yard line. The pass was just out of reach of Ayunga and O'Hara.

The Saints full back was the hosts' best player in the first half. The flying Aussie drove another teasing cross into the box which Rangers had to clear desperately wide for a corner.

Gallagher rose well to meet the set piece but could only direct just wide of Allan McGregor's right post.

Leon King was almost forced into an own goal from yet another pinpoint Strain delivery, with the ball narrowly looping over the bar with Allan McGregor stranded.

It didn't take long for the Buddies to make their mark in the second half. Just one minute after the restart Gallagher's long throw was flicked on by Main, who strolled away from marker Borna Barisic, to strike partner Ayunga.

His first effort was brilliantly saved by McGregor, but the ball fell kindly back to Ayunga to tap home the opener.

There was a long break in play as Rangers defender King received treatment for a serious head injury, with the youngster eventually stretchered off. He was replaced by experienced midfielder Ryan Jack as the visitors looked to salvage a result.

Kent ballooned a striker well over the bar, much to the delight of the home support, as the visitors continued to struggle to unlock St Mirren's resolute defensive block.

Tavernier nodded wide from Kent's deep cross as the home side continued to hold firm, with Robinson sending for subs Baccus and Alex Greive late on to try and steady the ship.

Ayunga almost grabbed his second just before being substituted, stepping inside John Lundstrum before slamming inches wide of the post with McGregor sprawling.

That miss came back to hurt them after VAR reared its head in Paisley once again. Clancy initially booked Ryan Kent for simulation after going down in the box after a challenge by Marcus Fraser.

After being called over to check the decision on the pitch-side monitor, Clancy pointed to the spot with Tavernier calmly slotting past Carson to bring his side level.

St Mirren have reacted well to VAR setbacks in recent weeks and Robinson's side almost retook the lead immediately when the ball dropped to Baccus in the box. He skewed his shot harmlessly wide.

Strain was replaced by Alex Gogic as the game entered an incredible nine minutes of added time.

Carson came to the Buddies' rescue to hang on to a point, beating Kent's fierce drive away to safety after the winger dribbled past two Saints players on the edge of the box.

An unmarked Jack then headed straight at the St Mirren keeper as the home side celebrated picking up another solid home point against the Old Firm, heading into the World Cup break on a high.
