White Sox catcher Geovany Soto hit a two-run single in the eighth and Tim Anderson added a two-run homer in the ninth to help lift the Sox to a 7-3 victory against the Tigers on Friday night at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Soto's hit came after Todd Fraizer and Avisail Garcia hit back-to-back groundballs at Tigers third baseman Nicholas Castellanos, who bumbled both for errors to load the bases in the eighth.
Frazier and Garcia also hit back-to-back homers off Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd to help the Sox to a 2-2 tie in the second.
Frazier led off the second with his second homer of the year to left field. On the next pitch, Garcia hit his fifth of the year to left-center field.
Anderson doubled on a ball that dropped in front of right fielder Jim Adduci to open the third. After advancing on Melky Cabrera's single, he scored on Garcia's soft bouncer up the third-base line to give the Sox the lead.
Pitching against his former Tigers team, right-hander Mike Pelfrey allowed three earned runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.
Pelfrey found early trouble when he loaded the bases on singles from Tyler Collins and Nicholas Castellanos and a walk from Victor Martinez. Justin Upton then hit a two-run single for an early Tigers lead.
Pelfrey issued another walk before Jim Adduci grounded into a double play to help him out of trouble. The Tigers tied it at 3-3 in the fifth when Martinez hit an RBI single to center field with two on base.
Anthony Swarzak pitched two scoreless innings to extend his scoreless streak to 112/3 innings to open the season. He earned the victory to improve to 2-0.
