Two inmates based at HMP Northumberland gained access to the roof during a late-night incident.
HMP Northumberland has seen deaths in its cells and drugs smuggled onto the premises - but tonight saw officers reasoning with a pair of prisoners who had made it onto the top of the building.
ChronicleLive understands all other prisoners at Category-C prison were returned to their cells as the drama unfolded above.

The incident was brought to a safe conclusion by staff at the Acklington jail with the prisoners coming down from the roof.
A spokeswoman for HMP Northumberland said: “We can confirm that there was an isolated peaceful situation involving two prisoners on a low level roof.
“Trained staff dealt professionally with the situation, which was brought to a calm and safe conclusion around 9pm.”
But it is just the latest in a long line of controversies for HMP Northumberland.
Mum Emma Brown recently avoided a spell behind bars herself after smuggling cocaine and Subutex into the prison when visiting an inmate. Brown, 36, of Girtin Road, South Shields, was given a suspended sentence for her troubles.
And in February last year, a prisoner was found dead in his cell after he had been drinking homemade hooch, an investigation found.
