Late-night crash leaves car submerged in Rochdale Canal

A late-night crash sent a car plunging into a section of canal near a primary school.

At around 11.30pm last night, Sunday June 17, nearby residents heard a commotion and a series of bangs, before discovering a white BMW had plummeted into the water of the Rochdale Canal near Smithy Bridge, in Littleborough.

Witnesses reported seeing a series of destruction, with two poles, part of a building, and an iron fence all being damaged in the collision.

The car is currently submerged up to its roof next to Smithy Bridge, alongside the primary school.

Recovery crews have attended the site this afternoon, June 28, to try and plan how to extract the car from the waterway.

Officers have closed the canal between lock 48 and 49, whilst investigations continue.

The Canal and River Trust expect the waterway will remain closed for the time-being, with the group expecting to issue another update tomorrow afternoon.

No one was treated for any injuries at the scene of the collision.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
