Late Irish summer holiday goers could be in for nasty weather surprise in Spain

Irish holidaymakers heading to Spain towards the end of the summer could be in for a nasty weather surprise, according to a weather expert.

Mario Picazo, a forecaster at weathernetwork and Eltiempo, says the soaring temperatures could lead to torrential rain and storm like weather at the end of August and in the beginning of September.

Picazo tweeted: "Mediterranean at 30 C = water vapour factory = extreme heat and stifling this summer = torrential rains at the end of summer and beginning of autumn = floods and impact on marine species."

He added: "It is true that a warm sea alone does not produce severe storms (that is taken for granted), but the atmospheric dynamics of frequent DANAS and incursions of cold air that we have experienced more frequently since the last decade, and not necessarily only in autumn, do."

Another Tiempo meteorologist said this could "boost" the torrential rain towards the end of the summer.

This could be a blow to the many Irish people who are planning there summer holidays for late August and early September, just after the traditional summer rush.

Spain was hit with two heatwaves over the month of July and while those have passed, average temperatures of well into the 30s are being experienced in most parts of the country.
