Late heartbreak for Japan as Kyogo Furuhashi's World Cup dream suffers shock blow at hands of minnows Oman

Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi was in action for Japan as they fell to a stunning defeat to Oman in Osaka.

Japan were kicking off their World Cup qualifying campaign and expected a convincing win against the team ranked 79th in the world.

Kyogo travelled with his country for the double-header with Oman in China but wasn't named in the starting XI for their group stage opener.

That's despite his lightning quick start to life under Ange Postecoglou at Celtic, where he has seven goals in his first nine appearances.

He started on the bench alongside Liverpool star Takumi Minamino and Real Madrid's Takefusa Kubo.

But with the score tied at 0-0 at the break, Kyogo was thrown on in a bid to find a winner.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts, however, as despite the introduction of Kyogo and Kubo, Oman stayed strong.

And they shocked the continent when sub Issam Al Sabhi popped up with a late winner.

It was an early blow for Japan as they seek to return to the World Cup but they have nine more games to recover.

They will face China on Saturday and also have Australia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam in their section.

Kyogo seems likely to play a part against China before heading back to Glasgow where Celtic take on Ross County and Real Betis after the break.
