NEW YORK _ If the Rangers were going to turn their season around, something needed to change.
The "win one, lose one" tendency they displayed during the first half of the season was emblematic of a team that couldn't find its way.
Around the time the calendar turned to 2020, Rangers coach David Quinn knew he had to try something different.
He decided to simplify their game-to-game approach.
That meant less time worrying about their opponents' strengths and more time focusing on themselves.
"That's been a conscious decision by our staff," Quinn said. "We're spending much more time talking about us and the things that we need to do to continue to establish our identity."
The results have been encouraging, with four wins in their previous five games entering Sunday's clash with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
It looked like the good vibes would continue, but after shutting out the Blue Jackets for the first two periods, the Rangers allowed two third-period goals in a crushing 2-1 loss.
The winning goal came from Oliver Bjorkstrand _ his second of the game _ with just 27 seconds remaining.
What could have been one of the most pivotal wins of the season turned into one of its most heartbreaking defeats.
